Chapter 11: Owen

Without even wondering why TruPaul gave up without any sort of argument I walked out of my monastery and straight into my Audi. As I drove off my property, I noticed that the grounds were in much better repair than they had been. There was a new flower garden not far from the front of the house, and a more practical herb and vegetable garden not much farther away. There were even some classy Romanesque statues that I never would have even thought of purchasing.

It was so strange how used to the dream I was becoming. Things that would have stopped me in my tracks a few days ago (or so it seemed in the dream,) were now merely things I casually observed. In any event, I headed off to the mall to try and find something to wear as a disguise. I figured it would be best to not stand out so much as I usually liked to, and find some nondescript clothes. I figured blacks and grays would have to do. It wouldn't do to be seen in any colors usually found in my closet.

As I made my way to the less than top quality store I chose, I decided to get several outfits. Guy clothes were so much cheaper than women's clothing, especially the more casual they were. It didn't take me long to figure out that my waist was pretty small, probably from my kick-ass aerobics regiment. I would have to wear a belt with the smallest pants size I could find.

I casually walked through the store, grabbing a few pairs of jeans and some long sleeved black shirts. I didn't want to look like a stereotypical thief, so I grabbed a few charcoal sweaters as well. knew I would have to cover my hair, there was no way in hell I was cutting it short any time soon. It took way too long to grow out. Instead I would just pin it up inside of a hat.

Before long, I had enough outfits to go incognito as Phil several times and not be seen wearing the exact same thing twice. Even though I didn't expect to do more than snoop around the house on Luna Avenue once, maybe two times. Maybe I'd even find that Penelope woman and talk to her as Phil. She would never even expect it.

During the ride back to my house, I practiced deepening my voice in order to sound more manly. It had been ages since I'd used such a voice, and I was startled by how easily Phil's voice came out of my mouth. I expected my voice to be more raspy, but it was smooth and deeper than I expected. It's probably another weird dream thing, I thought to myself. In any event, it would be a lot easier to act like Phil than I thought. The sweaters were big enough that I looked more stocky than I actually was, and with my hair pinned up, I would probably look bald beneath the hats I chose.

The sun was nearly down by the time I pulled into my usual spot in front of the monastery. The setting sun cast a red glow on the stained glass windows that I'd fallen in love with, and I stopped for a moment to admire them. The patterns didn't really form any images, much like the mosaic in the bathroom that changed as I watched it. I shivered slightly, remembering the final scene it had shown me. Had I been dressed as Stella of Phil in that last part? A sudden breeze made me shiver, so I hurried inside.

TruPaul was waiting for me just inside the door. She was wearing a tiny red dress and as always had heels to match. Her arms were crossed, and she looked at me with her intense and unnatural eyes. She didn't look happy at all. I knew it was probably not a good idea to piss off my dream guide, but I had a feeling that in order to wake myself up, I had to do what I thought was right. And if that meant dressing up like the man I never truly felt I was in order to sneak into my ex's house to find a journal or file on his computer or something, then so be it.

Without even saying a word to TruPaul, I stormed off to my room with my purchases to place them inside my miraculous dream wardrobe. Tomorrow would be my meeting with the heads of the research departments, and I had to be ready for that. Perhaps I could even wake up early, stake out the house on Luna Avenue and see if I had a chance to sneak in and rummage around for a bit. I could possibly find something about the missing files!
